The new provisions in the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) were reviewed by state officials and community members throughout Minnesota over the past year, with several groups meeting to determine how Minnesota would implement the requirements of this federal legislation.

The Department of Human Services (DHS) has released a bulletin that outlines requirements of ESSA and their recommendations for child welfare and education agencies to adopt in order to comply with ESSA.
The state has until September 2017 to submit a plan to the U.S. Department of Education that outlines the policies and procedures put in place for the 2018-2019 school year in Minnesota to adhere to ESSA requirements.
Commissioner Brenda Cassellius will be holding a public meeting on Saturday, February 25th at 10:00 AM at Brooklyn Center High School to discuss what it means to have a well-rounded education as part of ongoing efforts to seek community input in the decision-making process for implementation of this law in Minnesota.
This event is free to attend; however registration is requested for those interested in attending.
The discussion will be framed around three questions:
- Thinking about a well-rounded education, what do I want to see change about the student experience of school?
- Based on that answer, what do I want to see change about the actions of adults closest to the student?
- Based on both previous answers, what do I want to see change about system actions and policies that affect student experiences and adult actions?
